How can Counselling and Psychotherapy help?

I have been working as a counsellor and Psychotherapist for the last nine years. I have worked across the NHS, Voluntary and the private sector. I am an accredited member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and a member of my graduate body; the Foundation for Psychotherapy and counselling (FPC). Clients often get referred or come to see me when they are feeling down or suffering from a period of distress in their lives. They may have personal problems, be suffering in a relationship, career or family life. Alternatively they may have experienced painful life events or feel there is something missing in their lives. It may be difficult for them to find somebody to confide in or they may feel misunderstood by others. As a psychotherapist and counsellor I provide a safe and neutral environment to talk about what is going on, enabling individuals to explore their feelings, thoughts and behaviour at significant depth. Each client’s session is tailored towards their own personal needs and an understanding of their own unique situation is explored, within an environment that is empathic and non-judgemental.

For some I offer a lifeline during a period of emotional distress and for others I provide a place to reflect on current issues and concerns. Clients often feel a great sense of relief through talking and gain greater clarity and solace in their day to day lives. My approach is based on the understanding that difficult experiences in the past can continue to affect the way you feel and behave in the present. In the therapeutic relationship we can start to explore and recognise reasons why the things that make you unhappy seem to be repeating themselves. For example, if you live in fear that your manager will be critical of you this might reveal a pattern of difficulty in relationships, particularly with those in a position of authority. Perhaps this stems from growing up within a highly critical environment during your early stages of development. We would be able to look at how your life experiences have shaped the way you think, feel and behave. This will enable you to let go of past patterns of behaviour, which are no longer helpful. Ensuring you gain the psychological freedom to perceive yourself, the world and your relationships in a new way, enabling you to enjoy your life and live it more fully.

Initial Consultation

The initial consultation is a 90 minute process where we will discuss what is troubling you and gain an understanding of what it would be like to work together. I will be able to explore whether psychotherapy is best suited to your needs and if so what kind of therapy will be most helpful. I offer long and short term therapy. Long Term involves an in-depth exploration of personality and the roots of distress. Short Term provides a focus on specific problems and behaviour that you would like to overcome. Each session is once weekly for a 50 minute duration. They take in my consulting room in New Broad Street House, 35 New Broad Street London, EC2M 1NH.

Training and Qualifications

I have a BA (Hons) from Goldsmiths College, University of London and an MSc in Psychoanalytic Studies from University College London. I trained as a psychodynamic counsellor and psychotherapist at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation (WPF Therapy) one of the leading counselling and psychotherapy training organisations in the UK. I obtained a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) accredited Post Graduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Studies. I am an accredited member of the UKCP. I am also a member of the FPC my graduate body. Each of these professional bodies has a code of ethics to which I subscribe, and which includes undertaking regular clinical supervision and professional development.
